Interdisciplinary

This page exhibits work that I have completed in the Hutchins program whose themes bled through to focus on teaching and education. Being a teacher to young children is a passion of mine. Having the ability to take courses and acquire experience in my field of passion, even as early has my first year in Hutchins, was monumental to my growth as an educator. Here are some important pieces that helped grow my skill to be an educator.

I had the opportunity to take classes where we put together lesson plans, read through lesson plans, read about different styles of teaching, performing different styles of teaching, and responding to all of those. I also had the opportunity, my freshman year, to volunteer and help in a third grade classroom. This time of experience helped to solidify, early on in college, that I truly did want to teach. Having to declare a career path can be very daunting to do right out of high school, so having been able to spend time in the classroom as a freshman was a great way to really tell if teaching was for me. Turns out, it was.

This is a break down of the "Core Model" in teaching that is shown on the School of Education website. Here, I broke down the meaning of what the the Core Model means to me, while also talking about what lesson planning means to me.

This was a Number Talk lesson that I did with my brother who was in fourth grade, before I had a placement classroom. I was able to practice assessing a student's knowledge to better understand where they are and help them accordingly.

Here is a take-home exam from my Math 300A class where I learned a lot about how to dig deep into a math problem and be able to explain math to children. This take-home exam took hours of collaboration between myself and a few of my peers.

This piece was a break-down of a first grade math content standard where we created a lesson plan with several tasks to help teach to that standard.
